Bluetooth
has reached another milestone, making it past the first
trials
in a recent test undertaken in a retail setting. During
the test, which
was undertaken in suburban Stockholm by Nordic retailer
ICA Ahold
in cooperation with Ericsson, participants could buy food,
check their
accounts and find out about current products and prices
using mobile
phones equipped with a combination of WAP and Bluetooth
technologies.
The
store in which the trial took place had been equipped with
Bluetooth
networking server that was connected to a cash register
server and a
payment processing system.
" The trial clearly demonstrated the opportuniteies
in using mobile
devices as payment instruments, with substantial
convenience for
people when shopping in our stores, " says Jan-Olof
Jarnesjo, manager
of IT infrastructure at ICA.
" It's vital that retailers participate and
contribute to consumer services
in the mobile world at an early state," says Jorgen
Wennberg, vice
president, ICA Ahold Bank Project. " As far as we're
concerned, the
key is finding user-friendly and valued solutions for
consumers and stores."
I-model phone
I-mode,
NTT DoComMo's groundbreaking mobile Internet service,
now has an Ericsson phone designed specifically for use
with the
service. The phone, dubbed " DoCoMo by Ericsson
ER209i "
works with the japanese digital PDC standard.
With billingual Japanese and English operation, the new
ER209i
phone provides users with e-mail, e-commerce, banking,
restaurant
data, maps, new, weather forecast, games, character
downloading,
internet access and other features included in i-mode
service.
I-mode currentry has over 15 million subscribers,according
